A construction site of a road in Capital Male’s Henveiru area, has become a large breeding area for mosquitoes.
The construction work has been ongoing for 2-3 weeks and has been blocked for vehicles. Due to it being an open site a lot of trash and garbage are piling up. Moreover, since it is the rainy season water has accumulated. The worrying fact is that it is now a breeding site for mosquitoes. This is not only an environmental concern, but a health concern as well.
Mosquitoes breed in fresh, standstill waters such as this. It takes 8-10 days for an egg to turn into an adult. As a result of a large number of mosquitoes breeding, diseases such as Dengue and Chikungunya could spread in our tiny country. As of August 6th 2019, 3,310 Dengue cases have been reported by the HPA. (Read more about Dengue prevention here)
This area is visited by a lot of people every day. Right next to it is Senahiya hospital, and this increases the likelihood of the diseases mentioned above spreading. Furthermore, cyclists wait in traffic to get onto the bridge near this area. The residents living in this are have been complaining about the rise of mosquitoes as well.
