New research found that drinking beverages with zero sugar and zero calories is linked with increased weight gain in the long run.

We often turn to diet sodas and zero-calorie beverages for a guilt-free indulgence. But, is it truly a win/win situation?

The report published in Current Atherosclerosis Reports revealed that the researchers examined the health records of over 5,000 US adults and found that drinking “diet” Soda is actually linked in increasing weight gain in the long term.

“Consumers of Artificial sweeteners do not reduce their overall intake of sugar. They use both sugar and low-calories sweeteners and may psychologically feel they can indulge in their favorite foods,” Professor peter Clifton, lead author of the research explains.

Research claims that this thinking may lead sugar free drinkers to feel free binge on other high-calorie foods and drinks later, thus losing the benefit and reason why they opted for zero-calorie treats.

In addition, artificial sweeteners can also change the bacteria in the stomach, leading to weight gain and type 2 diabetes.

This does not prove that zero-calorie beverages have no use in our diet. However, over consumption of these on a daily basis could lead to more negatives than positives.
