The age-old guideline of healthy eating, “Red meat is harmful” might have just been debunked by new research.

The food category classified as cancer causing by the World Health Organization (WHO) has caused a massive uproar as a 14 member international team led by Bradley Johnston, Associate professor of community health at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, released a statement saying those who like red meat should not stop on health grounds. “Based on the research, we cannot say with any certainty that eating red or processed meat causes cancer, diabetes or heart disease,” he said.

They have been met with fierce criticism by public health researchers. The American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and other groups have savaged the findings and the journal that published them. This comes with no surprise as these claims not only impacts the views of the public but also questions the credibility of past claims made jointly by many of these organizations.

While it is a bold claim with seemingly good credibility it does require further investigation, this being a controversial statement. The conclusion the researchers endorse is eat with precaution and to your specific needs.

If you are worried about your health or eating habits, it is best to consult a dietitian or doctor.
